Rocket Snapdragons are a hybrid snapdragon bred for cut flower growers. These seeds can be directly sown, but they grow very slowly in the garden and often get overwhelmed by other weeds and flowers. For zones 7-9, it's best to follow the instructions below and start them early so they can establish themselves before the summer heat arrives. For zones 3-10, we find they are most effectively seeded in trays about 12 weeks before the last spring frost.

Seedlings can withstand a light freeze, and in zone 7, we generally plant them out in our garden in late February or early March, as they prefer cold weather to set their roots. They thrive in very rich, moist soil conditions. The seeds require light for germination, so when we start them in trays, we sow them on the surface of our potting material and cover them lightly with sand or vermiculite. They germinate quickly but grow slowly. In zone 7, they do not show significant growth until May and then bloom from June to July.

Once in the garden and reaching about 6" tall, you can pinch the center stalk to encourage the plant to produce more blooms. These side blooms won't be as tall as the center stalk, but you will generate more flowers.
